Broken tarball … Batteries were not included

Friday, December 5th, 2008

It could be due to lack of sleep or just plain oversight, but you may or may not have noticed some issues during compilation of the recent barnyard2 release.

Suffice to say the tarball has been rectified and is now available. For those who may have a downloaded a corrupt copy in the first few hours after release, please download and your problems should have disappeared.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

Barnyard2-1.0 … Merry GPL Christmas!

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

I like when things just work, as I’m sure most people do. When we first sat down to write an improved barnyard that is focused on the new unified2 format we just wanted to contribute to the community as much as we have taken from it over the past few years. It was identified recently that there were some licensing issues with QPL and what barnyard2 was built from. As our first significant project, this was exacerbated by me with my lackadaisical copying of files across and inadvertently bring the QPL headers along for the ride.

The only way to rectify this situation and release under GPL v2 the way we want to, meant that we had to start again. So take the Snort 2.8.3.1 codebase, permission from Bamm Vischer to release our sguil plugin modifications as GPL, 10 days of furious coding and we have a completed GPL version of barnyard2.

There has been a whole lot of clean up along the way, as much of the Snort utility wrappers are used as possible and the Waldo file support and structure has been totally revamped!

We hope this addresses all peoples concerns with the previous releases and will continue to adapt to any questions, queries, features that are thrown our way.

Thanks for your support, now head to the project page, download, use and abuse ;)
