Release Notes

2010-01-30 - NSMnow 1.6.2
  [*] Improvements.
     * Ubuntu. Fixed an issue with Karmic installs relating to the Tcl
configuration. It reverts the patch (Debian #442469) for tclx8.4.

     * CentOS. Added recognition for CentOS 5.4 machines. CentOS installations
are still considered experimental so all feedback is welcomed.

     * barnyard2. Updated links to barnyard2, 1.8-beta2.

2009-10-27 - NSMnow 1.6.1
  [*] Additions.
     * core. Added initial framework for upgrading the NSMnow scripts. The
NSMnow scripts will install along side the NSM administration scripts.

  [*] Improvements.
     * core. Fixed an issue with installations on Fedora, CentOS and RHEL
       when using explicit package directives.

     * snort. The supported version of Snort has now be bumped up to 2.8.5.1.

2009-10-18 - NSMnow 1.6.0
  [*] Additions.
     * OS. Initial beta support for Fedora, CentOS and RHEL has been finally
made it into the main installation routines. Time for some more bug
       reports.

  [*] Improvements.
     * NSMnow. The core of NSMnow has transitioned from PERL to BASH. The
primary reason for this change was to improve interoperability
across all platforms but also to remove the number of dependencies
       required.

     * snort. The supported version of Snort has now be bumped up to 2.8.5.

2009-09-05 - NSMnow 1.5.0

     * NSM administration. Added awareness for distribution specific
requirements, such as AppArmor configuration on Ubuntu systems.

  [*] Improvements.
     * barnyard2. Updated links to barnyard2, 1.6.

2009-05-30 - NSMnow 1.4.1
  [*] Improvements.
     * snort. Updated links to snort 2.8.4.1 and new site structure.

     * barnyard2. Updated links to barnyard2, 1.5.

     * NSM administration. Issues with the process management of multiple
sensors and/or servers has been fixed. Thanks Jon. B. Bayer.

2009-04-20 - NSMnow 1.4.0
  [*] Additions.
     * snort. Throughout the 2.8.3.X series of Snort, Ubuntu users have been
frustrated with the requirement to patch the one liner in server_stats.c
in order to cleanly compile. Due to this requirement it has significantly
reduced the simplicity offered by NSMnow, and so we have added a seamless
auto patching feature for Ubuntu systems that will ensure snort compiles
as expected. However, we have also upgraded snort so this may never be
used, but if it is ...

     * User Administration. The complexity of adding new users to connect to
the sguil server just got a whole lot easier. Two new functions for
adding and deleting users have been included with the administration
       scripts.

  [*] Improvements.
     * Administration. A number of little bugs and inconsitencies have been
addressed in this update. If you find anything that seems out of place
       then please let us know.

     * barnyard2. Updated links to new releae of barnyard2, 1.4.

     * snort. The primary snort link has been updated to version 2.8.4, with
the fallback links being limited to the 2.8.3.X branch.

2009-03-07 - NSMnow 1.3.5
  [*] Additions.
     * Server/Sensor Management. The ability to clear collected data from a
       sensor or server was added.

  [*] Improvements.
     * barnyard2. Updated links to the new release of barnyard2.

2009-02-04 - NSMnow 1.3.4
  [*] Improvements.
     * barnyard2. Updated links to the new release of barnyard2.

     * Sensor Process Management. It is now possible to specific sub-processes
explicitly when managing sensor processes. This complements the existing
ability to explicitly skip particulary processes. See the adminsitration
       README for more details.

     * Cron. Fixed issues with daily restarts with the cronjob.

2009-01-26 - NSMnow 1.3.3
  [*] Improvements.
     * UTC logging. A hard to track bug has finally been found and squished with
regard to timestamps and UTC enabled operation. All sensor specific date
operations now abide by the SENSOR_UTC variable. The manual has also been
updated regarding the configuration of UTC synchronisation.

     * Sensor Cleanup. The self cleaning operation of sensor log files has been
updated to ensure more reliability. The directory navigation issue has
	   been removed.

2009-01-24 - NSMnow 1.3.2
  [*] Improvements.
     * UTC logging. Fixed another regression with the UTC option not being
strictly adhered to. This can cause timewarps between the snort data
       and sancp data.

2009-01-22 - NSMnow 1.3.1
  [*] Improvements.
     * sancp. Fixed a small regression in the logging location of sancp data
and where the sancp_agent was looking for it.

     * LOG/PID files. Fixed an issue with /var/run being cleaned up on system
reboots, which prevented sensor/server from services starting up after
said reboot. LOG/PID directories are now dynamically created prior to
       starting services as appropriate.

2009-01-20 - NSMnow 1.3
  [*] Additions.
     * Server Sensor Management. Some additionaly management was added into the
mix to take into account a server's awareness of the sensors that will
connect to it and more specifically it's default Snort rule sets.

  [*] Improvements.
     * barnyard2. A temporary fix to the barnyard2 configuration generation has
been applied that caters for a small error in barnaryd2's parsing of the
       sguil configuration file.

     * snort. The primary snort link has been updated to version 2.8.3.2, with
the fallback links been limited to the 2.8.3 branch.

2009-01-17 - NSMnow 1.2.3
  [*] Improvements
     * Server Deletion. Fixed issue with database remaining when deleting a
server. If a server was deleted and some time later a server was created
with the same name it would fail due to the left over database.

2009-01-16 - NSMnow 1.2.2
  [*] Improvements
     * Interfacing. Fixed issue of long interface definitions being passed
directly to the commandline of snort and sancp causing errors. The short
version of the definition is now correctly parsed.

     * Startup Scripts. The original (non-generic) init scripts have been
deprecated to use the NSM Administration functions. The crontab entry
for daily log file rotation has been updated.

     * Documentation. Additional examples have been added to the manual of the
       NSM administration scripts.

2009-01-15 - NSMnow 1.2.1
  [*] Improvements
     * database naming. Fixed an incorrect legacy default value in NSMnow.conf
which did not conform to the new database naming convention.

     * mysql. With mysql an essential part of the server, the check to ensure
it is started before the sguil server process is started as been
       included.

     * Administration. Several bug fixes in the administration scripts have
been addressed primarily focussed around the editing of parameters.

  [*] Acknowledgements
     * Tom Buelens - for his contributions

2009-01-11 - NSMnow 1.2.0
  [*] Improvements
     * Uninstall. Like all friendly applications, NSMnow allows you to remove
itself and all associated files if you choose to do so.

     * Administration. The inclusion of the NSM Adminstration scripts brings
additional improvments to our standardised NSM framework. They provide
a unified method of adding, removing and editing all components of the
NSM framework such as sensors and servers.

     * barnyard2. The version of barnyard2 has been upgraded to version 2-1.0,
the new and completely GPLv2 friendly version.

2008-11-12 - NSMnow 1.1.1
  [*] Improvements
     * sancp. There has been a regression of sancp 1.6.2-release.C back to
version 1.6.1-stable. Given its temperamental issues of flushing its
       statistics to files.

     * barnyard2. The version of barnyard2 has been upgraded to version 2-0.5

2008-10-15 - NSMnow 1.1.0
  [*] Additions
     * Snort. Given the rather rapid progression that Snort goes through, there
is quite a good chance that NSMnow can break due to a new version and
links being changed on their main site. Some fallback URL's have been
added to ensure that NSMnow will be more tolerant to new Snort releases.

     * Status Messaging. The status messaging of the init scripts has undergone
some overhaulin' to ensure uniformity. I too have always thought that
pretty is a feature so this just makes me happy.

  [*] Improvements
     * Init Scripts. The init scripts have undergone some major restructuring
and a number of corner case bugs found and erradicated. A reduction in
complexity and simplified logic flow was the main aim here.

     * Downloading. The downloading of source tarballs is a little more fault
tolerant to failed downloads. In the event of a failed download it will
also attempt to clean up and provide the appropriate indications to the
user instead of borking in some non-informative manner.

     * Cron Jobs. The daily restarting of the snortl init script has been moved
from the cron.daily folders that are available on Debian based systems
to the default crontab folder available on most systems.

2008-09-16 - NSMnow 1.0.2
  [*] Improvements
     * Dependencies. Removed legacy dependancy on OS.pm that cause some issues
       with the pre-check routines.

     * Lenny Compatability. Updated package requirements in order to maintain
       full compatibility with Debian "Lenny".

2008-08-31 - NSMnow 1.0.1
  [*] Additions
     * Pre-checking. The PERL core is now wrapped in a little BASH to ensure
that NSMnow has all pre-requisites to function correctly. Similarly only
Debian/Ubuntu systems have been tested at this stage with a view to
branch later on. Two new parameters, "-F" and "-S" are available as part
       of the pre-checking system.

     * Versioning. You can now check what version of NSMnow you are running. A
rather useful function if stability issues and fixes are going to become
       a regular affair :)

  [*] Improvements
     * mysql. Configuring mysql with root passwords should be a little easier
now and a little less cryptic not knowing if one has been set or not.

     * sancp. With the URL changing recently for sancp-1.6.1 we thought we
might as well push forward to the 1.6.2-release.C version which has seen
considerable testing since June of last year and also addresses the bugs
       found in 1.6.1.

     * Downloading. Fixed small issue regardig the download only mode with the
buildessential, tcl and sguiltools modules. If you choose not to
download then it will not fail since the package management systems will
       attempt to download when installing.

     * Reconfigure. Fixed issue with tcl module returning an incorrect error
code when it was already configured.

     * Links. Fixed link to sancp download, which has recently been updated
due to the recent 1.6.2 release candidate was announced. That was good
       time ;)

     * Dependencies. Removed the LWP dependency by now using the ever reliable
wget utility from the system. This greatly reduces the complexity of
       downloading the required source tarballs.

     * Time. Fixed off by one issue with months in the log files. Clearly not
a show stopper, however, it pays to be thorough.
